From Gainesville: Take Archer Road (SR24) west of Gainesville out toward Cedar Key to C347. (From I-75 to C-347 is about 48 miles.) There will be a sign for the Lower Suwannee NWR on the left. Turn right onto C347 and head north.

From Cedar key: Leave Cedar Key on SR24 (which is the only way to leave Cedar Key.) Go for about three miles to C347. There will be a sign for the Lower Suwannee NWR on the right. Turn left onto C347 and head north.

In about two miles there will be signs for Shell Mound Unit and Shell Mound County Park on the right. Turn left at these signs onto C326. Take this road all the way to the end, past the county park, continuing as the road turns to dirt, passes under oaks, winds around the shell mound, and finally dead-ends at the water (total distance about three miles from C347).
